this is gross

Tomorrow, the Orange and Blue Observer and the Illini
Conservative Union will be holding “Conservative Coming Out
Day” on the Quad. This event will include a gun raffle and
testimonials from conservative students about the oppression
they allegedly face because of their conservative views.

The event will include a fund-raising raffle to provide free
handguns to women and homosexuals. Their own publicity
states, “Affirmative Action giveaway. Women and homosexuals
specially invited to enter…‘One for every purse.’” (Quoted
from a publicity flyer received via email from the Illini
Conservative Union to the Orange and Blue Observer listserv.
September 16, 2005.)

The Illini Conservative Union has chosen to intentionally
mock National Coming Out Day, which is held every October
and organized by PRIDE and LGBT groups across the country.
National Coming Out Day is designed to encourage and support
LGBT persons as they come to terms with their sexual
orientation. “I think the important thing to emphasize here
is that we support their right to free speech and thus their
right to hold this event. However, we find the way they’re
doing it to be disrespectful. They’re making a mockery of
the coming out process, which can be extremely difficult for
people, and they’re using old-fashioned generalizations to
label women and gay people. Nothing productive or meaningful
is accomplished,” Feminist Majority executive advisor
Melissa Murphy said. “We’re not trying to organize some
super-PC crusade in response to what they‘re doing, but
there is a certain level of decency that is not being upheld
in their event. Grouping women and gay people together as
purse-carrying objects of femininity is neither honest nor
funny --at least not to someone over the age of 12. Come to
any meeting of PRIDE or Feminist Majority, and you’ll
immediately see that generalizations like this one don’t
hold an ounce of credibility,” PRIDE publicity director Jon
Monteith said. The Illini Conservative Union also plans to
deride the University of Illinois’ affirmative action policy
by “evaluating” each potentially winning raffle ticket
instead of choosing a winner randomly.

This isn't a joke?! How disgusting! I should try and win a free gun and shoot them. I am a weak woman after all.

The thing i find most disturbing about this is

"as they come to terms with their sexual orientation."

In comparison its like saying well I'm getting a D in the class so I wont try anymore. If you ask any 'gay' person they will not say that "Coming out of the closet" (which by the way is derogitory) is coming to terms with their sexual feelings, its that they dont want to hide something abou themselves anymore because they werent quite sure how to "say it."

Someone from central who goes here asked me yesterday if I knew about the gun raffle, trying to get a rise from me because I'm liberal. "You know, you're liberal, so you're against guns." "To be fair, my brother owns a gun, my mother owns a gun, I'm not against guns, I'm against stupid people toting guns."

He didn't however tell me about the 2nd part. I really like the response of the feminist majority executive in this case, I think that is very classy. Very democratic, yet not being a wuss about it. Yeah, we're letting them do it because it would be wrong to stop them, but they are disrespectful.

Hopefully this will backfire in some regard, and people will see it that way. However, most likely it will continue stereotypes OR students won't even know about it.

BOO!

I am glad to know college is still the same even though I left. People do things just because they can. They mock others just to see if they can get away with it and it doesn't fit into their cookie cutter lifestyle. What bothers me most is that I have no doubts that people would show up to this meeting. They will show up and do what they would do at any other meeting. Make fun of and generally have a good time mocking those that don't belong to their group. Sure you have the right to mock and ridicule those who are different than you. Its those who don't that make the difference. But those that don't and don't make a fuss about it can also be as bad as those who held it.

at the very least, it encourages people to be politically aware, whichever side they agree with most

that being said, I love how conservatives can piss people off and have a complete disregard for PC-ness (or however you want to describe it), yet liberals must always be courteous to the opposition, and if and when they arent, they're jumped on
